marlboros, meds & pressed linens

celeb, fashion and all-things-ladylike blog 'Jezebel' featured an article today that was so pleasing to read that i felt compelled to write my sentiments down. it's on the topic of 'last things' - those items which, when economic crisis has stripped you of all else, you simply can not forgo.
the writing was so succinct, the message so relevant and the tone so sentimental that it made me wonder what my last things would be. barring my computer (it's on a level beyond give-up-ables) & my iphone (same story) what am i unwilling to give up ... ?

1. cigarettes (i buy them in cartons when i go to l.a. though, so they're 1/2 the price they would be in manhattan).

2. having my prescriptions filled with the brand version of the drug. (they say the generic is no different, but i firmly disagree).
3. chinese laundry service, ( while i can't definitively say that they are chinese, for the sake of a succinct 'last thing' item name i'll take this risk of political propriety) & ($20 every couple of weeks is well worth it when it means the time i would spend doing laundry can be appropriated to more pressing matters, ie: school, work, sleep).

post-script: ironically, the laundry photo i found through an image search is of a laundry service in l.a. which i immediately recognized.

spring break

In which I might have made a good subject for the cover art of a Jacqueline Susanne novel.

perfect makeup, on the tundra

... one of his favorite movies is call of the wild, in which loretta young, after four days of exposure to the cold, is shown with her makeup fully intact. if you must freeze, this is the way to do it ...
   -unzipped (isaac mizrahi biopic)

in other news, snow ices my knee caps, the elevators are not working in my apt building - forcing me to walk up/down 14 flights, and cabs are few and far between. happy snow day.

i'm speechless

All I need to say is that a girl who graduated a year after I did from Marlborough, my high-school,  has written a novel. This 'novel' is essentially a 3rd rate Gossip Girl set in Hancock Park (my neighborhood in LA), based at Marlborough and involving all parties related. I think I shall be sick ....

charming

sometimes homemade cakes are so much more charming.

spring is coming

it was 12 degrees last week, in the 50's this week -- already spring is on it's way.
on the way home from blair's apt last night i saw this graffiti across from the silver center (nyu). a hint that spring is on it's way here, perhaps?

impatience *

... go outside for a photography excursion, but the cold leaves my hands horribly chapped and i seem always to have an essay in need of finishing.

*an experiment in frequent anecdotal posts.

ca c'est quelle taille?

today ...  a miracle happened.

out with my mom, we discovered (and pillaged ) a repetto sample sale. they had the classic bb ballet flat (name after french actress/style icon brigitte bardot), heels, mary-janes etc. all for $50 !!  ( they normally are sold for $180 - $350 ) it was quite a whirlwind and i got my self into a bit of a tizzy, but walking out the door with 10 pairs under my arms was well worth the french shoe induced frenzy.
a very happy birthday to me.

"scents" of style

on tuesday i decided to treat myself to a bit of pre-birthday shopping.
i started off at the apple store, where i purchased a new iPhone and a lovely coral colored case for it.
from there, i walked to Greenwich Letterpress, where i picked up (another) MmMg 'Past Present Future' day planner. i chose the larger size, in anticipation of writing all of my spring semester class assignments etc in it.
my final purchase of the day was at Aedes de Venustas. it was too cold out to walk to L'Artisan Perfumeur's Thompson Street store, so i tracked down this little shop. among other brands, A de V  sells the complete line L'Artisan eau de toilette as well as their lotions and candles. located at 9 Christopher St ( right off of Greenwich Ave) this shop is a hidden gem and i'm quite pleased to have found.
what did i get there? a fresh new bottle of my scent Poivre Piquant by L'Artisan. I was also given a couple of sample vials of other scents.
there's nothing better than a new shop discovery...
